Step 6: Time for Your Practical Driving Test
Now that you've completed all the hard work, you're prepared for test day.
Regardless of which test centre go to, the format will remain consistent: For safety, the will conduct an eyesight test where you'll need to read a license plate from 20 meters away. You may wear glasses, and if you require them for clear vision, it's essential to wear them while.
You'll have two questions regarding vehicle maintenance and safety, known as ‘show me, tell me questions. The first question (the ‘tell me’ question) will be asked when you're outside the car, while the second question (the ‘show me’ question) will be posed when you're behind the wheel.
The driving portion will commence with a 20-minute general driving section. During this time, the examiner will give you directions to follow (e.g., “Turn right at the end of the road”) and will ask you to safely pull over at the side of the road several times.
The examiner will typically request one of three reversing manoeuvres during the driving section. If not asked then, you’ll perform one at the end of the test as you return to the centre.
The manoeuvres include bay parking, parallel parking, and pulling up on the right side of the road, reversing two car lengths, and then merging back into traffic.
Next, you'll enter the independent driving section, where you'll follow directions from a sat nav. Remember, deviating from the route is usually not a significant issue, as long as no driving faults occur.
Many learners mistakenly believe they’ve failed if they stray from the route, but that isn’t always the case.
Finally, you’ll return to the driving test centre and park.
The test will conclude, and within minutes, you'll receive your result.
If you do not pass, the examiner will provide feedback and highlight your mistakes, offering valuable advice for improvement.
If you pass, you’ll receive a pass certificate and have the opportunity to apply for your full licence immediately.
Regardless of the outcome, the examiner will email you your results sheet.
